Large Gardens
Large Gardens Example - Collier
"We would like to express our appreciation for your caring attitude. After 3 years association with Notcutts we have come to know the team and it has been tremendously comforting that you have never run away from the problems encountered in the project. The design created by Chris and Kate has proved to be a joy to behold and like all gardens will continue to evolve"

Site Description
Centrally located on a one acre plot, the house was in the process of being renovated.

The plot had formally been part of an old established garden and some original features remained, including an old wall and flights of brick steps.

A large open area of garden was situated to the front of the house and a marginally smaller area, dominated by parking, was to the rear.

Along the western side of the garden was a steep bank rising many meters on top of which were positioned a number of mature trees, including Chestnut and Oak.

To the eastern side of the garden, there was an avenue of lime trees that framed a long drive. These lime trees were densely planted and a number were in poor health.

The site was overlooked by one house in the north west corner.

Design Brief
The client did not want to follow a traditional route as the house did not reflect any particular architectural period.

Water was to be an essential element within the design and to provide a reflective surface. An irrigation system was required which incorporated rainwater gathered from the roof.

A smaller garden was to be created to the western side of the house from which the client could wander out after working in a home office and enjoy a few moments of relaxation.

The scheme was to be based on a formal layout but not too grand. Elements within the design were to provide symmetry and rhythm which directed the eye and make best use of the space.
